GES Dismisses SHS Placement Shortage, Says 800,000 Spaces Available

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed concerns over a shortage of senior high school (SHS) spaces, saying about 800,000 places are available for a little over 600,000 students seeking admission.
GES Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, said the available spaces show that the challenges facing some students and parents under the 2026 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) are not due to a lack of space.
Speaking in an interview, he said about 527,000 students were automatically placed this year, compared with 483,000 in 2025 and 447,000 in 2024.
He added that the number of students relying on self-placement had also dropped from about 107,000 in 2025 to 53,000 as of September 10, with registration still ongoing.
According to Mr Fenyi, between 93% and 95% of students have now secured placement through automatic and self-placement.
He therefore rejected suggestions of a nationwide placement crisis, arguing that the system had achieved about 95% efficiency.
Mr Fenyi said the remaining challenges were being addressed through 17 resolution centres established nationwide to deal with human errors, technical difficulties and other isolated cases.
He acknowledged heavy pressure at some centres in Accra and the Ashanti Region but stressed that the situation in those areas should not be viewed as a reflection of the entire country.
