President John Dramani Mahama is set to officially open the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon.

The three-day event will run until Thursday, January 8.

The conference theme, “Building the Ghana We Want Together for Sustainable Development,” aims to explore strategies for national growth, inclusive economic development, and long-term sustainability.

President Mahama will serve as the special guest of honour at the opening ceremony. Other notable attendees include Dr. Ishmael Yamson, Board Chairman of MTN Ghana, who will deliver the keynote address, and Ms. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, Chairperson of the University of Ghana Council.

The event is organised by the School of Continuing and Distance Education in collaboration with the College of Education at the University of Ghana.

At the conference launch in November 2025, Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Goosie Obuadum Tanoh, said the theme reflects the aspirations of Ghanaians for steady employment, reliable markets, and a well-organised economy.

“The theme asks us to take a clear-eyed look at what must change if we want Ghana to succeed in a more competitive world,” he noted.

Mr. Tanoh explained that the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+) underpins the government’s transformation agenda, focusing on productivity, trade, and competitiveness to build an industrial economy that benefits all citizens.

The programme is structured around three core pillars:

  1. Production – initiatives such as Growth24, Make24, Build24, and Show24.

  2. Supply Chains & Markets – strengthening national supply chains and market systems.

  3. People-Centred Transformation – putting citizens at the heart of national development.

Over the years, the New Year School and Conference has become a critical platform for experts, policymakers, and academics to deliberate on pressing national issues and provide actionable recommendations to support Ghana’s growth.
