Firefighters Rescue 68 After Two Buses Crash on Kumasi-Accra Highway

Sixty-eight people were injured after two Granbird buses collided at Duapompo on the Kumasi-Accra Highway.
The accident occurred at about 10:31 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The vehicles involved were a VIP Granbird bus, registered GW-5373-23 and driven by Simon Azuma, and a KN KIA Granbird bus, registered AK-980-26 and driven by Francis Yeboah.
Both buses were carrying 34 passengers each, bringing the total number of people involved in the crash to 68.
Members of the public managed to rescue 67 injured passengers before firefighters arrived at the scene. The victims were subsequently transported to the Konongo Government Hospital for medical attention.
The driver of the VIP bus, however, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters.
The GNFS said its crew used a spreader and a dashboard roll technique to extricate the trapped driver before transporting him to the hospital in an ambulance.
The collision caused partial damage to the front cowl of the VIP Granbird and the rear section of the KN KIA Granbird.
The exact cause of the accident remains unknown, with the GNFS confirming that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
