The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has condemned premature discussions about future presidential ambitions within the party, calling such talk disrespectful to both the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama.
In an interview on Tuesday, December 16, Kwetey said discussions of presidential bids, especially in the first year of governance, are not only premature but also distract the party from fulfilling its governing responsibilities.
“Especially in the first year after coming to power, any conversation about running for office is, in my view, an insult to the NDC as a whole, and even to President Mahama, because we have barely begun our term,” he stated.
Kwetey reminded the public of the eight years the NDC spent in opposition and stressed the importance of prioritising the delivery of campaign promises now that the party is in government.
“We spent eight years in opposition, made promises to the people, and we have now assumed power. We are yet to accomplish even 10 or 20 percent of what we pledged,” he said.
He emphasised that the party’s immediate focus should remain on ensuring government success, holding ministers and officials accountable, and maintaining discipline within the NDC, rather than engaging in succession or flagbearer debates.
