ECG Unions Announce Nationwide Protest Over Proposed Private Sector Participation
The Senior and Junior Staff Unions will demonstrate across ECG regions on September 29 and petition President Mahama.

The Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are set to stage a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, to protest the proposed private sector participation (PSP) in the company.
The unions said the peaceful demonstration will take place across all ECG operational regions and culminate in the presentation of a petition to President John Dramani Mahama.
In a directive signed by the national chairpersons of the SSU and JSU, Christopher Apawu and Lucky Larry Agboka, respectively, divisional and branch leaders were instructed to mobilise members for the exercise.
The petition will be presented to regional ministers in the various operational regions for onward submission to the President.
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m.
In Accra, ECG workers will assemble at the forecourt of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), while those in Kumasi will gather at the ECG Regional Office near the Airport Roundabout.
Workers in other regions are expected to assemble at their respective ECG regional offices, with demonstration routes to be announced later.
The unions said participants would return to their assembly points after the demonstration for a briefing before dispersing.
The planned protest forms part of a broader course of action announced by the unions earlier this month in opposition to the proposed PSP arrangement.
As part of the ongoing action, members will continue wearing red armbands until the unions announce the next phase.
The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), which is convening the demonstration, will lead the exercise.
The unions said PUWU had formally notified the Inspector General of Police of its intention to organise the demonstration in accordance with Section 1(2) of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
National and regional committees will also be established to coordinate the exercise, with further details expected to be communicated through the relevant committees.
