At least 41 people have died and 49 others have been rescued after a boat capsized on Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Norris Mulongoyi, the provincial transport minister for Tanganyika province, told the Associated Press that search and rescue operations were ongoing to locate passengers who remained missing.
The vessel was travelling from Kigoma port in Tanzania to Kalemie in the DRC when it sank on Thursday.
A survivor, Annie Moyoni, told Radio Okapi, a UN-backed Congolese broadcaster, that passengers were awakened at about 1 a.m. after noticing that the boat had begun tilting to one side.
The cause of the accident remains unclear.
