BoG to Introduce Upgraded Ghana Cedi Banknotes in November
The Heritage Series will feature enhanced security, greater durability and designs celebrating Ghana’s heritage and identity.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to introduce a new series of Ghana cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, as part of efforts to modernise the currency and strengthen its security and durability.
Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced the initiative on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the conclusion of the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.
The new banknotes will feature enhanced security measures, improved durability and modern designs intended to reflect Ghana’s heritage, culture and national identity.
According to Dr Asiama, the existing cedi banknote designs have been in circulation for more than two decades, making an update necessary as currency technology and security standards continue to evolve.
“The upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced security features, improved durability, and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and Ghana’s aspirations,” he said.
The Governor said the Heritage Series is expected to strengthen protection against counterfeiting, withstand prolonged circulation and contribute to more efficient and cost-effective currency management.
He added that the new series would also provide an opportunity to honour Ghanaian national heroes while showcasing important elements of the country’s heritage and identity.
Existing Banknotes Remain Legal Tender
Dr Asiama clarified that the introduction of the Heritage Series does not mean existing Ghana cedi banknotes will be withdrawn.
He explained that the new and existing notes will circulate alongside each other, with the current banknotes remaining legal tender.
“There is no need for the public to rush to exchange or to withdraw existing notes solely because of the introduction of the new Heritage Series,” he said.
The Governor therefore urged the public to continue using existing banknotes alongside the new notes after their introduction.
Heritage Series to Launch on November 3
The Bank of Ghana is scheduled to officially launch the Heritage Series on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.
Dr Asiama also appealed to individuals, businesses, traders and financial institutions to handle banknotes properly to preserve their quality and reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency.
He urged the public to avoid crumpling, writing on or stapling banknotes, as well as using them for decorative purposes such as money bouquets and spraying.
“Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes. It will reduce replacement costs for the central bank and it will support efficient currency management,” he said.
Dr Asiama described the integrity of Ghana’s currency as a shared responsibility and urged Ghanaians to embrace the Heritage Series while maintaining proper standards for handling the cedi.
