The Combined Kumasi Central Market Traders Union has appealed to construction firm CONTRACTA to reconsider reported plans to close its Kumasi office amid prolonged funding delays affecting the stalled Kejetia Phase II Market Project.

In a petition presented on Tuesday at their office in the Ashanti Region, the traders said CONTRACTA’s Kumasi office remains the only official channel through which they seek clarification about the project.

Speaking on behalf of the traders, Madam Emilia Coffie noted that the closure of the office would completely cut off communication between the company and thousands of traders awaiting the completion of the project.

The union also lamented the recent layoff of about 150 workers, which it said was linked to financial pressures caused by delays in the release of project funds.

According to the group, CONTRACTA has done its best under very difficult circumstances.

In their statement, the traders praised CONTRACTA for providing free health screening programmes for traders during the project period.

The union further appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and other stakeholders to expedite payment to the firm as they anticipate the reopening of the market.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the management of the company, Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Danso, consultant for CONTRACTA, thanked the traders for their support and assured them that management would review their concerns and provide an update on the matter.
