Police in the Ashanti Region have begun a manhunt for six armed robbers who attacked a Berekum Chelsea team bus, resulting in the death of one footballer during the incident.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in a statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs, assured the public that the suspects will be arrested in the shortest possible time.
The attack occurred at about 10:30 pm on Sunday, April 12, along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyanihin District, as the team was returning to Berekum from Samreboi.
Police reports indicate that six armed men, including three wielding pump-action guns, ambushed the VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20. In an attempt to escape the attack, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road into a nearby bush.
Police stated that patrol teams responded to distress calls and found the bus carrying about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea off the road after the attempted escape.
During the attack, player Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but sadly passed away while receiving treatment.
A passenger, identified as 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was also robbed of GHS 4,500 during the incident. Investigators retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene as part of ongoing evidence collection.
The tragic incident has raised serious concern within the Ghana Premier League, with renewed calls for improved safety for travellers on highways, especially at night.
The police say additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed to track down the suspects, while urging the public to remain calm and provide useful information to aid investigations.
