Veep Calls for Spending Priorities as Ghana Faces Debt Burden

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has defended the government’s approach to public spending, arguing that Ghana’s significant debt obligations require difficult choices and careful prioritisation of limited resources.
Speaking on the KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government could not meet every public demand while the country continued to grapple with substantial debt.
She explained that although some debt obligations could be renegotiated, others must be honoured, making it necessary for government to direct available resources towards areas that offer the greatest benefit to citizens.
“If you decide that where we are as a country is not an easy place, and we owe many people, then you must prioritise. Some debts can be renegotiated, while others must be paid,” she said.
The Vice President cautioned against spreading limited resources too thinly in pursuit of political popularity, warning that doing so could weaken critical sectors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure.
She said the effectiveness of government should ultimately be measured by the tangible improvements citizens experience in their daily lives.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang cited better roads, improved access to healthcare and measures to reduce the financial burden on families supporting children in school as examples of interventions capable of benefiting Ghanaians irrespective of their political affiliation.
“Ultimately, people want results. They want outcomes they can see and feel,” she said.
