Lionel Messi is preparing for a milestone moment in his illustrious career as Argentina’s World Cup semi-final against England will mark the first time he has faced the Three Lions at senior international level.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has made more than 200 appearances and scored 125 goals for Argentina, yet he has never previously played against England. That will change when the two sides meet in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Argentina secured their place in the last four with a 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland after surviving a spirited challenge in the quarter-finals. Although Messi failed to score for the first time in the tournament, he remains one of the competition’s leading scorers with eight goals, alongside France’s Kylian Mbappé, and continues to hold the record as the World Cup’s all-time top scorer.
Former England defender and BBC pundit Micah Richards believes Messi’s influence makes Argentina a dangerous opponent despite England’s athletic advantage.
“England can outrun Argentina, but they have that little genius in Messi. The whole team plays for him, and everyone should be excited,” Richards said.
He described the Inter Miami forward as one of the most difficult players to defend because of his movement, awareness, and ability to exploit space at crucial moments.
“He’s impossible to mark because he drifts into spaces where defenders don’t expect him. His technique, spatial awareness, and finishing are exceptional,” Richards explained.
Richards also compared Messi’s presence on the pitch to England midfielder Jude Bellingham, highlighting the Argentine captain’s unmatched aura and leadership.
“Jude has personality and aura, which makes him special. But Messi’s aura is on another level. That’s what makes this match so fascinating,” he added.
With a place in the World Cup final at stake, all eyes will be on Messi as he prepares for his long-awaited first encounter with England.
