The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that government is putting in place a series of measures aimed at addressing the rising cases of indiscipline in schools across the country.

He expressed concern over recent incidents, including reports of students bringing firearms to school, vandalising CCTV cameras on campuses, and engaging in the sale of illegal drugs such as cannabis within school environments. He also cited cases of students attacking teachers during the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), describing such behaviours as unacceptable.

Mr. Iddrisu revealed that government will soon convene a national education conference before the end of July. The forum is expected to bring together academics, religious leaders, education experts, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to develop comprehensive strategies aimed at restoring discipline in schools.

He stressed that maintaining discipline in educational institutions is a shared responsibility and cannot be left solely to the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The Minister further noted that past reviews of disciplinary systems may have weakened enforcement, contributing to what he described as a growing culture of laxity. He added that the GES must be empowered with stronger authority to strictly enforce codes of conduct and deal decisively with disciplinary breaches.

Mr. Iddrisu made the remarks in Parliament while responding to questions from Members of Parliament.
