Installation of high-capacity transformers expected to boost reliability and reduce outages in Kumasi metropolis

Story Highlights
  • Electricity Company of Ghana is installing two upgraded 30/39MVA transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi.
  • The project aims to improve power stability, reduce outages, and meet rising electricity demand in the city
  • Controlled outages will be carried out on May 6 and 7 to facilitate safe installation and energization works

The Electricity Company of Ghana (Electricity Company of Ghana) has begun installing two high-capacity transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi as part of efforts to strengthen and stabilise electricity supply across the city.

The upgrade involves replacing two existing 20/26MVA transformers with more powerful 30/39MVA units, a move expected to significantly increase capacity and reduce strain on the network.

According to ECG, the project is aimed at addressing recent intermittent outages and voltage fluctuations in parts of Kumasi, which are largely driven by rising demand rather than generation challenges.

An Acting Managing Director of ECG stressed the importance of the intervention, noting that Kumasi’s rapid growth requires stronger infrastructure to ensure reliable power delivery.

He explained that the upgrade will help the system keep pace with demand and improve overall service stability for consumers.

On-site engineers also described the project as urgent and technically demanding, explaining that the new transformers will relieve pressure on the existing system and enhance operational stability.

Teams from Accra and the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Division are jointly handling the installation, which is scheduled for completion between May 6 and May 7, with energization expected shortly after.

Installation Plan:

  • May 6: Replacement and energization of Transformer 2
  • May 7: Replacement and energization of Transformer 1

Planned Outages:

To facilitate safe installation, ECG will carry out controlled outages on:

  • May 6 and May 7
  • 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

The exercise will involve temporary shutdowns on sections of the 33kV network and managed load distribution on 11kV feeders.

ECG has assured customers that the interruptions are carefully planned, limited in duration, and necessary to achieve a more stable and reliable power system for Kumasi.
