  • Students criticise Ghana Scholarship Authority for issuing new scholarships abroad while existing beneficiaries struggle

Ghanaian doctoral students studying in the United Kingdom have announced plans to stage a protest in London over delays in the payment of their tuition fees and living stipends by the Ghana Scholarship Authority.

In a statement released on April 6, 2026, representatives of the affected PhD students said the demonstration will take place on April 17 at the Ghana High Commission London.

The group explained that the protest follows months of unsuccessful efforts to engage authorities, as many students continue to face serious financial difficulties.

According to them, some scholarship beneficiaries have gone between 15 and 40 months without receiving stipends. They also reported that tuition fees remain unpaid in several cases, leading to consequences such as withdrawal from academic programmes and threats of deportation from universities.

The students further criticised the Scholarship Authority for allegedly neglecting those in the UK while continuing to award new scholarships to other countries, including Canada, United States, Germany, and China.

They also highlighted delays in issuing renewal letters required for continuing students to register for new academic terms. According to the group, these letters have not been provided for more than 15 months, leaving many unable to enrol for the current academic year.

The students say the situation has left them stranded academically and financially, prompting their decision to take public action in hopes of drawing urgent attention to their plight.
