No Fuel Shortage in Sight Despite Middle East Tensions – NPA Assures Ghanaians

Ghana’s Petroleum Stocks Remain Stable as Refineries and Incoming Shipments Secure Fuel Supply Amid Global Price Hikes

Story Highlights
  • Ghana has over five weeks of diesel and nearly seven weeks of petrol in stock
  • Sentuo Oil Refinery and Atuabo Gas Plant are actively supplementing supply
  • Global oil prices are rising, but local supply remains secure

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has reassured Ghanaians that there is no need to panic over a fuel shortage, affirming that the country’s petroleum stock levels are adequate even amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Abass Ibrahim Tasunti, Director of Economic Regulation and Planning at the NPA, said in an interview that Ghana’s fuel supply remains stable and that additional shipments are on the way.

He highlighted the role of the Sentuo Oil Refinery in bolstering domestic supply. “We have over five weeks of diesel and almost seven weeks of petrol in stock. Additional cargoes are anchored and ready to discharge, supplementing our existing supply,” Tasunti said.

The NPA official further emphasized that the refinery has been consistently producing since June last year, becoming a crucial source of fuel for the domestic market. Similarly, the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant continues to maintain LPG stock levels, ensuring the country’s energy needs are met.

Despite global oil prices trading above $70 per barrel due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, Ghana’s fuel situation remains secure. Some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have implemented minor price adjustments in line with the current pricing window, but the NPA confirmed that the country is well-positioned to meet demand.

“Ghanaians should not fear that this conflict will affect our fuel supply. Operations are ongoing, shipments are confirmed, and our domestic production is strong,” Tasunti concluded.
