Police to Enforce Court Ban on “Stop Galamsey” Protest
Accra Regional Police say protest barred for February 27 but organisers can reschedule in line with court order and Public Order Act

- A High Court has barred the “Stop Galamsey” protest scheduled for February 27, citing public order and safety concerns
- The Accra Regional Police Command confirmed the court order has been served and will be strictly enforced
- Organisers may hold the protest at a later date, pending agreement with police in line with the Public Order Act
The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed it will enforce a High Court order prohibiting the “Stop Galamsey” demonstration scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2026.
The court granted the prohibition on February 24, citing concerns over public order and safety, particularly as the planned protest coincides with the State of the Nation Address.
Responding to social media claims from the protest organisers that they had not been served with court documents, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command clarified in a February 26 statement that the order had been duly served and urged compliance.
“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to inform the public that a High Court in Accra, on 24th February 2026, granted an order restraining the conveners of the ‘Stop Galamsey’ demonstration from holding the planned protest on Friday, 27th February 2026,” the statement read.
While the protest on the scheduled date is barred, the police indicated that organisers may be allowed to hold the demonstration at a later time. Officers said they are engaging with the conveners to identify a mutually convenient date, in line with the High Court directive and the Public Order Act.
“The police remain open to engaging the conveners to agree on a new date for the demonstration in accordance with the law,” the statement added. “We urge the public to respect the court order and avoid actions that may disrupt public peace.”
