Korle Bu Teaching Hospital suspends staff amid allegations of neglect after a hit-and-run victim dies.

- Two doctors and two nurses suspended following alleged failure to treat injured engineer Charles Amissah.
- Amissah turned away by multiple hospitals before dying at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
- Investigation committee formed to ensure accountability and transparent inquiry.
The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has suspended two doctors and two nurses following allegations that they refused to provide emergency care to a 29-year-old engineer, Charles Amissah, who later died at the facility.
Amissah, an employee of Promasidor Ghana Limited, suffered severe injuries in a hit-and-run accident on February 6, 2026. Witnesses described a harrowing ordeal as he was transferred across multiple hospitals in Accra seeking urgent care.
According to the hospital, a committee has been formed to investigate the incident thoroughly. “In line with established administrative procedures, a committee has been constituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the unfortunate death of the victim,” the management said in a statement on Monday, February 23.
The tragedy began at the Circle Overpass, where Amissah was struck by a vehicle. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel arrived promptly, stabilising him for urgent hospital transfer. However, reports indicate he was turned away by Police Hospital, Ridge Hospital, and eventually Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, citing a lack of available beds.
Upon arrival at Korle Bu, EMS staff reportedly urged hospital personnel to admit Amissah immediately, warning that further delays could be fatal. Allegedly, the patient remained unattended in the ambulance bay or hospital precincts, and later went into cardiac arrest. Despite resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced dead and his body moved to the mortuary.
Korle Bu management emphasized that the interdicted staff are suspected of failing in their duty of care. “Pending the outcome of the committee’s work, the Board and Management call on all persons connected to the matter to cooperate fully with the committee to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry,” the statement added.
The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and quality healthcare services, promising to release further information once the investigation concludes.
