A/R: GPRTU Ready to Reduce Lorry Fares but Blames ‘Waawaa’ Drivers for Delays

Ashanti Regional GPRTU set to reduce lorry fares, cites unregistered drivers as cause of implementation delay

Story Highlights
  • The Ashanti Regional GPRTU is ready to reduce lorry fares following drops in fuel prices and spare parts costs
  • Implementation is being delayed by unregistered “Waawaa” drivers and multiple unauthorized transport unions in the region
  • The union is calling on government officials and law enforcement to support registration and enforce compliance

The Ashanti Regional Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced today that it is ready to reduce lorry fare prices, but the union is facing challenges due to the presence of unregistered drivers in the region.

During a press conference at their Ashanti Regional headquarters, the Chairman of the union, Alhaji Smaila Boakye, revealed that these unregistered drivers, commonly referred to as “Waawaa drivers,” are complicating efforts to implement the fare reduction.

He noted that the Ashanti Region is the only region in Ghana with 26 different unauthorized transport unions, making it difficult for the GPRTU to make major decisions that affect drivers and passengers.

Mr. Boakye stated that since fuel prices and the cost of certain car spare parts have decreased, the union is now set to reduce lorry fares in the Ashanti Region.

He alleged that some security personnel support the “Waawaa drivers,” which hinders the union’s ability to operate effectively.

Chairman Boakye called on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to hold a meeting and collaborate with the union to strengthen its operations.

He also appealed to the Transport Minister, Hon. Joseph Nikpe Bukari, and all law enforcement agencies to support the GPRTU in implementing a sticker system for all registered vehicles.

During the press conference, the union encouraged all unregistered drivers to register with the Ashanti Regional GPRTU at no cost.
