A household name in the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Prosper Tachie, has been elected National President of the association.
The private legal practitioner and seasoned teacher won the position this afternoon during GNAT’s ongoing Delegates Conference in Accra.
He contested the role against the incumbent president, Rev. Isaac Owusu, and a third contender, Charles Amponsah, who did not attend the congress to campaign or present his manifesto. Consequently, the election was effectively between Prosper Tachie and Rev. Isaac Owusu.

At the end of the polls, Prosper Tachie secured 436 votes out of 704 valid votes, representing 61.75%. Rev. Isaac Owusu received 266 votes (37.78%), while Charles Amponsah had 2 votes (0.28%).
Widely recognized in teaching circles as a formidable leader committed to teachers’ welfare, Tachie has a proven track record of championing educators’ interests.
He is lauded for being the only GNAT Regional Chairman in Ashanti Region to insure all teachers under the Supreme Care Insurance, fully funded through members’ dues without extra cost.
Tachie is also credited with originating the popular GNAT Bundle, an affordable data package for members, and Switch 3.1 for B.Ed holders, which allows basic school teachers to upgrade academically within a year to qualify for Senior High School teaching or enable current SHS teachers to switch teaching fields.
Additionally, he spearheaded the GNAT Hour radio programme, which has become a nationwide platform for teacher sensitization and engagement. His advocacy for teachers’ welfare extends even to regions where he is not a chairman.
The newly elected National President of GNAT, Lawyer Prosper Tachie, along with other national officers chosen at the Delegates Conference at UPSA, are expected to be sworn in this evening.
