Duke of Edinburgh Embarks on Two-Day Ghana Visit to Strengthen UK-Ghana Ties

His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Ghana on Sunday, November 23, 2025, for a two-day working visit aimed at strengthening the modern partnership between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

The visit focuses on climate-smart development, education, innovation, and inclusive sports, reflecting shared Commonwealth values.

During his stay, the Duke will meet President John Dramani Mahama, engage with traditional leaders, visit entrepreneurs, and observe UK-supported initiatives in education and environmental sustainability.

On Monday, November 24, he is scheduled to visit Aburi, where he will tour a kindergarten and teacher-training classroom at the Presbyterian Women’s College of Education. The visit highlights how Sabre Education, in partnership with the Government of Ghana and supported by the UK, is improving play-based early childhood education and teacher training programs.

At the Aburi Botanical Gardens, the Duke will also tour a plant nursery dedicated to conserving native flora and training horticulture students. He will meet innovators in the cocoa sector, focusing on sustainable trade, artisanal production, and inclusive growth. A commemorative tree planting will follow, continuing the tradition of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.

In Accra, Prince Edward will interact with young entrepreneurs from 24 Commonwealth countries participating in the Commonwealth Startup Fellowship Programme Bootcamp, a collaboration between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and Imperial College London. The initiative supports startups addressing global challenges and promoting innovation and economic growth across the Commonwealth.

Another highlight will be his engagement with Ghana’s Paralympic and sports associations, ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, showcasing Ghana’s role in inclusive sports and its social and developmental impact.

The Duke will also attend a UK-Ghana Creative Arts event, featuring a performance of The Black Star – Teacher of Africa by Kofi Adinkra, celebrating Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy and highlighting cultural collaboration, skills development, and investment in Ghana’s creative sector.

High-level engagements include a call on President Mahama, a durbar with the National House of Chiefs, and a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, reflecting the historic ties between the British Royal Family and Ghana’s traditional authorities.

The visit will conclude with the King’s Birthday Party at the British High Commissioner’s residence, bringing together government officials, business leaders, civil society representatives, diplomats, and the Ghanaian diaspora.

British High Commissioner Dr. Christian Rogg described the trip as a celebration of the “strong and evolving relationship” between Ghana and the UK, emphasizing shared values and cooperation in education, climate action, inclusive development, and innovation.
