The Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has launched a new regional initiative aimed at improving workplace safety and ensuring compliance with Ghana’s labour laws. The Ashanti Regional Health and Safety Compliance Taskforce will help oversee inspections, advise employers, and reduce workplace accidents.
Speaking at the launch on Monday, Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ wellbeing and dignity.
“Every workplace injury carries both a human cost and a national cost,” he said, calling for stronger monitoring and strict adherence to the Labour Act (Act 651) and the Factories, Offices and Shops Act (Act 328).
Dr. Pelpuo described the Taskforce as a decentralised body that brings enforcement closer to local communities and businesses.
“This initiative means faster response times, better oversight, and more accountability at the local level,” he explained.
The Taskforce will support labour officers in inspections, improve coordination across districts, offer guidance to employers and workers, and ensure that safety measures are realistic and sustainable.
The Minister also called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to actively support the Taskforce, stressing the importance of local leadership in making the system work effectively.
Dr. Pelpuo encouraged employers to implement safety measures through proper training, safe tools, and regular inspections, while urging workers to follow rules and report hazards promptly.
Echoing the Minister, Mr. Hamidu Adakurugu, Chief Director of the Ministry, highlighted that workplace safety is a national priority. He commended the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, MMDCEs, regulatory agencies, private sector organisations, and civil society partners for their contributions.
