“The Nkoko Nketenkete Project Has Come to Stay” – Hon. Eric Opoku

Government Launches Nationwide Poultry Initiative to Reduce Imports and Empower Local Farmers

Story Highlights
  • Over 95% of Ghana’s chicken is imported
  • Annual chicken import costs reach $400 million
  • Nkoko Nketenkete Project will distribute three million vaccinated birds nationwide

Ghana is taking a decisive step toward self-sufficiency in poultry production with the official launch of the Nkoko Nketenkete Project in Kumasi today, 12/11/2025.

Hon. Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture, highlighted the permanence and importance of the initiative, declaring, “The Nkoko Nketenkete Project has come to stay.”

Speaking on the Ghana Se Sen Show on Lawson TV/Radio with Kwame Tanko, Hon. Opoku outlined the country’s heavy reliance on imported chicken.

“Over 95% of our chicken is imported from abroad, costing Ghana $400 million annually,” he said. He traced the surge in imports over the years: 4,000 tons in 1998, 104,000 tons in 2004, and 324,000 tons in 2022.

The project aims to reverse this trend by distributing three million vaccinated birds across constituencies nationwide.

Each constituency will receive roughly 10,000 birds, benefiting about 200 households, with each household receiving approximately 50 birds. Feed support will also be provided to selected beneficiaries to ensure successful rearing.

Hon. Opoku emphasized that the Nkoko Nketenkete Project supports farmers of all sizes, from household producers to smallholders.

“This initiative is about empowering our local farmers, strengthening food security, and reducing our dependence on imported chicken,” he said.
