Acting Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to Appear Before Parliamentary Vetting Today
President Mahama’s nominee to defend his record and vision before Parliament amid opposition concerns over timing

- Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie appears before Parliament’s Appointments Committee today for vetting as Chief Justice
- His nomination follows the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who served since 2023
- Speaker Bagbin dismisses Minority motion to suspend vetting, citing lack of constitutional basis
Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is set to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee today, Monday, November 10, 2025, for vetting as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.
The session, slated to begin at 11:00 a.m., follows his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama. The announcement was confirmed in a statement issued by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination comes in the wake of the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who had held the position since 2023. During the vetting, Members of Parliament will assess his competence, judicial philosophy, and vision for strengthening Ghana’s justice system before recommending his approval to the House.
Meanwhile, a last-minute motion from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to suspend the vetting process was struck out by Speaker Alban Bagbin on Friday, November 7. The Minority Leader had argued that the vetting should be paused pending the outcome of ongoing court cases involving the former Chief Justice.
Speaker Bagbin, however, ruled that there was no constitutional or procedural justification to delay parliamentary proceedings due to a court case, warning that doing so could set a troubling precedent for legislative independence.
