Residents of Bompata in the Asante Akim District of the Ashanti Region have strongly declared their opposition to any form of mining within their community.
At a press conference on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the residents announced that no company or individual would be permitted to explore or mine for gold in the area, emphasizing their resolve to protect their environment and livelihoods.
Spokesperson Joseph Baah said the decision was driven by widespread concerns over the destructive impact of illegal mining (galamsey) in other parts of Ghana, which has led to environmental degradation, loss of farmlands, and health hazards.
“Our position is grounded in the devastating effects mining has caused elsewhere. We will not allow any mining activity in our community,” Baah stated.
He urged the government and relevant regulatory bodies to respect Bompata’s stance and refrain from issuing mining permits for the area, noting the community’s commitment to preserving its natural resources for future generations.
