  • NPP Bono East Chairman Ibrahim Baba Bukari claims he was the real target in police operation that killed his brother
  • Police deny raiding Chairman’s home
  • Chairman Bukari insists his brother was innocent and links the incident to prior political comments he made on radio

The Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Baba Bukari, has broken his silence on the recent police operation that led to the fatal shooting of his younger brother, Seidu Bukari.

Chairman IB as he is fondly called strongly alleged that he was the intended target of what he calls a “setup.”

Mr. Baba Bukari, speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on Ghana Se Sen on Lawson TV/Radio on Monday, August 4, 2025, refuted police claims that his brother was a suspected armed robber.

He insisted Seidu was not a criminal and accused the police of carrying out a calculated plot against him, allegedly in retaliation for remarks he made on a local radio station.

“My brother is not a criminal and has never been one,” Mr. Bukari said. “I believe I was the target, not him. It was a setup. I had made certain comments on radio, and I knew something like this was coming.”

His comments come after widespread media reports suggested that police raided the home of the NPP regional chairman, resulting in a fatality. However, the Ghana Police Service has denied these reports, describing them as false and misleading.

In an official statement, the Service clarified that there was no raid on the chairman’s home. Instead, it said officers from the Bono East Regional Command responded to intelligence on an attempted robbery around 1:20 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025.

During the operation, Seidu Bukari—described by police as a member of a known robbery syndicate—was allegedly shot while trying to flee. He later died at the hospital. According to the police, Seidu was already on their radar for his involvement in previous robbery cases, particularly incidents involving stolen motorbikes across Techiman and surrounding areas, with connections to Kumasi resale networks.

The statement added that Seidu and his gang had returned to Techiman that night to carry out another robbery but were intercepted by police.

Despite this, Mr. Baba Bukari remains adamant that the narrative being pushed by the authorities is part of an orchestrated effort to silence him, maintaining that his brother’s death was unjustified.

The incident has sparked heated public debate and drawn attention to concerns about law enforcement accountability and political targeting.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special team from the CID Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
