President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the construction of a major road project dubbed the Greater Kumasi Bypass in the Ashanti Region, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and restoring the city’s urban structure.

Speaking during his tour of the region, Mahama explained that the bypass will be designed to divert heavy-duty trucks away from the city center, improving traffic flow and enhancing road safety.

“We are set to begin work on the Greater Kumasi Bypass. The first quadrant will pass through Ejisu, linking the Mampong and Techiman roads. This means that all large cargo trucks traveling to Burkina Faso and Mali will no longer pass through central Kumasi,” he said.

The President emphasized that the project is part of a broader strategy to decongest the city, enhance travel safety, and preserve Kumasi’s urban planning integrity.

“This bypass will help decongest Kumasi, promote safer and faster travel, and restore the city’s urban integrity,” Mahama assured.

The proposed project has been welcomed by local stakeholders who see it as a long-overdue intervention to ease pressure on the region’s overstretched road network.
