Story Highlights
  • Final teacher licensure exam must be completed by August 30
  • Candidates who failed earlier exams have a last chance to resit
  • A new assessment model will replace the paper-based system

The government is set to phase out the current teacher licensure examination system, with the final session scheduled to take place by August 30, 2025, according to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Iddrisu urged all relevant bodies to collaborate with the licensure registrar to ensure the last round of exams is conducted promptly and efficiently.

“This should be the final opportunity for candidates who previously attempted the exam and didn’t pass. That process must conclude by August 30,” he emphasized.

The Minister also commended the committee tasked with reviewing the teacher certification framework. He praised their progressive recommendations, which advocate for a more well-rounded and hands-on assessment model.

Under the new system, teacher evaluations will move beyond written tests to include supervised teaching practicums and structured mentorship programs. These changes are aimed at ensuring that newly qualified teachers not only understand educational theory but can also apply their knowledge effectively in real classrooms.

Mr. Iddrisu added that the new licensure approach will be rolled out soon after the final batch of candidates has completed the current exam format. The reforms are designed to raise the bar for teacher training and ultimately enhance the quality of education across the country.
