Interior Minister Mubarak Muntaka has issued a firm warning following the violent incidents that disrupted the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North, declaring that all perpetrators—regardless of political ties—will face the full force of the law.

The disturbances occurred on Friday, July 11, when a group of unidentified macho men stormed the St. Peter’s Polling Centre, one of 19 stations participating in the rerun. The chaos led to a temporary suspension of voting and resulted in the assault of several individuals, including former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, July 14, Muntaka assured the public of the government’s commitment to justice and electoral integrity.

“I can assure you that not my party, not any group, will be allowed to bring back vigilantism,” he stated.

“I have spoken to the IGP, shared video evidence, and instructed swift action to bring the perpetrators to book.”

He stressed that political affiliations will not shield wrongdoers from consequences, affirming that law and order would be upheld under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.

“We’re not going to condone any misconduct, whether it comes from inside or outside our party,” Muntaka added.

The Electoral Commission organized the rerun to resolve a months-long electoral dispute from the December 2024 general election, during which irregularities and destroyed collation materials left the constituency unrepresented in Parliament.

In a tightly contested rerun, the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn narrowly defeated the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie to win the seat.
