Fix Network Challenges to Curb Robberies – Police Tell MTN
Command says poor network coverage is hampering response to armed robberies
- Police urge MTN to fix poor network in robbery-prone areas of Eastern Region
- Weak connectivity is aiding armed robbers and delaying police response
- MoMo vendors advised to enhance personal security and report threats quickly
The Eastern Regional Police Command is calling on MTN Ghana to urgently address persistent network challenges in key areas of the region, warning that poor connectivity is enabling criminal activities, especially armed robberies.
Speaking at the 2025 Stakeholders Forum in Koforidua, the Regional Operations Commander, ASP Agyare Kofi Okyere, highlighted critical zones like the Adukrom-Aseseeso and Aseseeso-Somanya stretches, as well as the Donkorkrom area, where weak mobile signals and bad road conditions are giving criminals an upper hand.
“Criminals are capitalising on the poor network and dangerous roads to ambush travelers. We need MTN to fix this urgently to improve police response,” ASP Okyere said.
Deputy Commander ACP Richard Appiah also raised alarm over rising attacks on mobile money (MoMo) vendors, urging them to adopt safety measures such as operating from secure booths and avoiding public cash counting. He encouraged vendors to keep emergency police contacts on hand and report any suspicious behavior promptly.
The police believe that enhanced mobile network coverage, coupled with better vendor security practices and heightened community awareness, will help curb the surge in robbery cases across the region.
