“Mahama Wants to Complete Krofrom Market to Honour Former President Kufuor” – Kumasi Mayor King Zuba
Kumasi Mayor says Mahama’s push to complete Krofrom Market by 2026 is a tribute to former President Kufuor and part of NDC’s nationwide market revival agenda.

- Mahama includes Krofrom Market in NDC’s 18-market revival plan.
- Completion expected by December 2026; full readiness by 2027
- Project intended to honour former President Kufuor’s original vision
President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to completing the long-abandoned Krofrom Market project by December 2026, promising to revive the 19-year-old dream as part of his broader market redevelopment agenda.
Speaking during his “Thank You Tour” to the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Mahama announced the market’s inclusion in the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Market Enhancement Programme, a flagship policy targeting 18 stalled markets across Ghana.
In an exclusive interview on Lawson TV/Radio’s Ghana Se Sen Morning Show, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, revealed that the President’s motivation for reviving the Krofrom Market is deeply personal and symbolic.
“President Mahama wants to complete Krofrom Market to honour former President John Agyekum Kufuor,” King Zuba disclosed during the interview with host Kwame Tanko.
According to the Mayor, preliminary technical assessments are already underway, and the project is expected to be fully ready by 2027, with actual construction targeted for completion by December 2026.
“All what President Mahama said is what we have already started working on. Assessments have begun, and he has asked me to gather all the project documents and hand them over to the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang,” the Mayor added.
A Legacy Rekindled
The Krofrom Market project was first initiated in 2007 under the administration of former President Kufuor, who commissioned the architectural designs and performed a symbolic sod-cutting. However, the project stalled and remained incomplete for nearly two decades.
It saw a fresh start in 2009 under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, when Samuel Sarpong was appointed Kumasi Mayor and led the first phase of construction — the structural foundation still visible today.
President Mahama, according to King Zuba, sees the project not just as an economic imperative but as a tribute to the vision of President Kufuor and a gift to the people of Kumasi.
“If you’re looking for someone who genuinely admires and respects former President Kufuor, it is President Mahama,” the Mayor said, emphasizing the symbolic importance of completing the project.
Economic and Social Impact
Krofrom Market has been abandoned for years, becoming a hotspot for criminal activity and posing safety hazards to the community. Its completion is expected to boost local commerce, create jobs, and restore economic vibrancy to the area.
As the NDC government rolls out its Market Enhancement Programme, the Krofrom Market has become a flagship initiative, and Mahama’s pledge signals a renewed focus on unfinished infrastructure and regional development.
