Wontumi Still In Prison, Sleeps On Bare Floor – Palgrave Boakye

Spokesperson for incarcerated former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dismissed reports that he has been released from prison.
Palgrave Boakye-Danquah said Wontumi remains in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where he is allegedly sleeping on the bare floor and a student mattress.
“Chairman Wontumi is still in prison. He is sleeping on the bare floor and a student mattress,” he said during an interview.
Palgrave became emotional and broke down in tears while speaking about Wontumi’s alleged condition in custody.
He also urged the public to disregard reports claiming that the former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman had regained his freedom.
Wontumi was convicted by the High Court on July 20, 2026, alongside Akonta Mining Company Limited, over illegal mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
The court found him guilty on two counts relating to the unlawful assignment of mineral rights and facilitating an unlicensed mining operation.
Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay sentenced Wontumi to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour on each count, to run concurrently, and imposed a fine of 10,000 penalty units on each count.
Akonta Mining Company Limited was also fined 15,000 penalty units on each of the two counts.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, has since filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn the conviction and secure an acquittal on all four counts.
The legal team argued that the convictions were not supported by the evidence presented during the trial.
