The Minority in Parliament has called on the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to urgently intervene following the detention of Ohene Kwame Frimpong in Amsterdam over alleged financial crime offences.

The issue was raised in Parliament by Patricia Appiagyei while delivering the Minority’s welcome address on behalf of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the House resumed for the second meeting of the second session.

Addressing Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Deputy Minority Leader described the detention of a sitting Member of Parliament in a foreign country as a serious matter that required immediate attention.

She said the Minority expected the government to take swift diplomatic steps to protect the rights and dignity of the MP, including securing consular access, legal representation, and due process.

According to her, Parliament has a responsibility to ensure that no member of the House is denied fair treatment, particularly when facing legal challenges abroad.

Patricia Appiagyei further called for a full briefing from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the actions taken so far by the government.

She added that the Minority was raising the matter on behalf of the people of Asante Akyem North, arguing that the detention of their MP could affect their representation in Parliament.
