Ghana’s Black Princesses have endured a disappointing start to their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign after suffering a 3-0 defeat to tournament debutants Ecuador in their opening Group C match in Poland on Sunday.

Ecuador struck just two minutes into the game, putting Ghana on the back foot early.

The Black Princesses struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and were unable to find their rhythm against a well-organised Ecuadorian side. Ecuador doubled their lead shortly before half-time to go into the break 2-0 ahead.

Ghana hoped for a comeback after the restart, but Ecuador quickly put the game beyond doubt, scoring a third goal 24 minutes into the second half to secure all three points.

The defeat adds to Ghana’s struggles in opening matches at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, with the Black Princesses recording just one opening-game victory since their tournament debut in 2010.

Ghana must now regroup for their remaining Group C matches against South Korea and France. South Korea and France drew 1-1 in the group’s other opening fixture, leaving the Black Princesses needing positive results in their remaining games to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.
