- Ghana Chamber of Mines CEO Ken Ashigbey has endorsed the two-month ban on burials at Osu Cemetery
- The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly imposed the moratorium following reports of grave desecration
- Ashigbey is urging authorities to use the suspension period to audit operations
Ken Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has thrown his support behind the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly’s decision to impose a two-month ban on burials at the Osu Cemetery, describing the move as timely and responsible.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Korle Klottey, Alfred Allotey Gaisie, announced the immediate suspension of burial activities following reports of grave desecration and alleged illegal and unethical practices at the cemetery.
The temporary ban is aimed at creating space for a thorough review, audit, and restructuring of the cemetery’s operations and management systems.
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Mr Ashigbey commended the Assembly’s swift action and urged authorities to use the period to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the cemetery’s layout and administration. He also encouraged the adoption of modern technology to enhance mapping, planning, and record-keeping.
He noted that advanced digital mapping tools could be used to properly document burial plots and coordinates, ensuring efficient use of space and improved planning for future burials or possible relocation when capacity is reached.
Mr Ashigbey stressed that the two-month moratorium offers a vital window to tackle longstanding challenges at the cemetery and implement sustainable management solutions.
The burial suspension follows public outcry over alleged grave tampering and unauthorised interments at the historic Osu Cemetery, sparking calls for tighter supervision and improved oversight.
The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly has assured residents that updates will be provided once the ongoing assessment and restructuring process is completed.
