23 Arrested, 64 Changfans Seized in Western Region Galamsey Crackdown

In a relentless fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, the Ghana Police Service has apprehended 23 individuals during targeted intelligence-driven raids in the Western Region.

The crackdown, focused mainly in the Wassa Akropong District, resulted in the confiscation and destruction of approximately 64 mining machines.

According to an official police report, arrests took place along the Wassa Akropong–Japa–Dadieso highway. Officers also raided the Obeng Mining Group site in Wassa Japa, dismantling 64 changfan machines.

At Wassa Dominase, following intelligence reports, police intervened near the GOIL and Energy Oil stations on the Agona Amenfi–Gyedua Kesse Junction road. Here, seven changfan machines, washing boards, three water pumps, and a pickaxe were seized and disabled.

In a separate operation in Asankrangwa, police acted on tips about illegal mining close to the 1D1F building along the Asankra Saah–Asankra Kwabeng road, recovering three water pumps and four motorbikes.

All 23 suspects remain in custody and are cooperating with ongoing investigations.
