“We Are Holding the Government Accountable Despite Our Small Numbers” – Asenso-Boakye
MP Francis Asenso-Boakye says NPP, now in opposition, is holding the NDC government accountable despite fewer MPs, highlighting worsening galamsey and scrutiny of the 2026 budget

- NPP holds NDC government accountable despite small numbers in Parliament
- Galamsey worsens under NDC, with EPA confirming destruction of food crops
- Opposition actively scrutinizes 2026 budget and government policies
Francis Asenso-Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency, has affirmed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), now in opposition, is actively holding the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable, despite having fewer MPs in Parliament.
Asenso-Boakye highlighted during an interview on the Ghana Se Sen Show that the opposition, led by Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin, continues to scrutinize government policies and ensure transparency, particularly on pressing national issues such as galamsey.
He noted that the NDC, while in opposition, had accused the NPP of fueling galamsey and promised to resolve the issue within four months. “But since taking power, the situation has worsened,” he said, citing an official Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report showing that illegal mining is destroying Ghana’s food crops.
While acknowledging that the NPP also had shortcomings while in government, Asenso-Boakye said the party has learned lessons and is committed to effective oversight.
He said the NPP MPs scrutinizing the 2026 budget and key parliamentary matters to protect the interests of Ghanaians
He further criticized the NDC, saying, “When they were in opposition, they spoke passionately and won the hearts of Ghanaians. But after taking power, they have been unable to deliver, particularly on galamsey. The criticisms they levelled against the NPP, they themselves have failed to implement.”
Asenso-Boakye added that Ghanaians are closely watching parliamentary proceedings, emphasizing that holding the government accountable requires diligence, strategic oversight, and commitment, even from a small number of MPs.
