Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has revealed plans to officially declare his intention to contest the party’s presidential primary on July 29, 2025.
Speaking in an interview, Ing. Agyepong stated that his decision is driven by a sense of duty to God and country.
“It is now official. God willing, I will be contesting the NPP presidential primary. I’ll make the official announcement on July 29,” he confirmed.
Ing. Agyepong has long advocated for internal reforms within the NPP and was instrumental in proposing that the party prioritize its presidential primaries ahead of other internal elections.

In a memorandum dated April 17, 2025, to the NPP’s Constitution Amendment Committee chaired by Frank Davies, he proposed sweeping changes—including the removal of Article 13(9) of the NPP constitution. That clause allowed for a special electoral college to whittle down presidential aspirants to five.
He argued that the practice was undemocratic and prone to manipulation. “The current structure of this special college—made up of fewer than 1,000 members—can be influenced and undermines fairness,” he emphasized.
Over the weekend, at the party’s National Delegates Conference, the NPP adopted this key reform and scrapped the special electoral college, a major victory for Agyepong’s push for greater inclusivity and transparency.
His anticipated declaration adds momentum to what is expected to be a keenly contested NPP presidential primary slated for January 31, 2026.
