Suspected Phone Thief Allegedly Swallows Five SIM Cards During Arrest
Central East Police also recover suspected stolen household items and report pig theft conviction

Kasoa, September 28, 2026 — A 27-year-old man, identified as Awudu Baba, allegedly swallowed five SIM cards during commander said the suspect, upon realising that he was about to be arrested, swallowed the five his arrest at a police checkpoint on the Kasoa-Bawjiase Highway, the Central East Regional Police Command has reported.
According to the Central East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Nchor, the suspect was arrested at about midnight on September 19, 2026, after police intercepted him at the checkpoint.
Police said a search uncovered five mobile phones of different brands, including an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung A12, along with five SIM cards.
The police commander said the suspect, upon realising that he was about to be arrested, swallowed the five SIM cards, which he had allegedly removed from the phones.
Further investigations reportedly established that the phones had been stolen from Awutu Bawjiase in the Central Region.
The police have appealed to anyone who may have lost a mobile phone in the area to report to the Central East Regional Police Command to assist with identification and recovery of their property.
Police recover suspected stolen household items
In a separate operation, personnel from the Operations Unit of the Central East Regional Police Command intercepted a Kia Mighty truck, registration number GN 5255-23, during a night patrol on September 26, 2026.
The truck was allegedly carrying several household items suspected to have been stolen.
The recovered items included a king-size mattress, kitchen cabinet, deep freezer, seven refrigerators, microwave, stove, 19 sets of framed aluminium-glazed windows, nine sets of electric sockets, a knapsack spraying machine, 10 TV sockets and two floodlights.
The items were being transported by Patrick Haziel, the driver, and Mohammed Sulemana, who police identified as the alleged owner of the goods.
According to police, preliminary investigations linked the items to a building at Chocho, along the Bontrasi-Bereku road in the Central Region.
DCOP Nchor said Haziel told investigators that the items belonged to Sulemana and that Sulemana fled after noticing the approaching police patrol.
He reportedly told police that he had been hired to transport the items from Awutu Bentum to Tuba, where Sulemana resides.
“Further investigations led to the arrest of suspect Mohammed Sulemana, who admitted that he stole the mentioned items and hid them at Bentum, where he later hired the services of the driver to convey them,” DCOP Nchor told journalists.
Sulemana has been remanded into police custody and is expected to reappear before the court on October 12, 2026.
Police said one person has so far reported and identified some of the recovered property.
The command has therefore urged other potential victims to report to the Central East Regional Police Command to identify and retrieve their belongings.
Man jailed for stealing pigs
Meanwhile, Evans Pinkreh, alias Kwame Adjei, is serving a five-month prison sentence after being convicted for stealing and selling about 50 live pigs from a piggery where he worked as a caretaker.
The farm owner reported the incident to the police, leading to investigations and subsequent court proceedings.
The Kasoa Akweley District Court convicted Pinkreh on August 29, 2026, and sentenced him to five months in prison following several court appearances.
