Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has confirmed that the upcoming SIM card re-registration exercise will not place any financial burden on taxpayers.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 24, the minister explained that the initiative will be fully funded without drawing on public funds. He noted that the Public Procurement Authority invited him to provide clarity on the process, and the Finance Ministry has authorized the exercise to ensure it does not cost Ghanaians.

“The commitment we received confirms that both the Centralized Electronic Registration and the SIM registration platform will be at no cost to the taxpayer,” Sam George said, adding that proper justification is required when public funds are not used.

He further explained that funding will come from telecommunications companies, who have been engaged and informed of their role in covering the costs.

Assuring transparency, the minister emphasized that the process will be competitive and will not involve sole-sourcing.
