The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has assured over 2,000 public sector workers that their temporarily suspended salaries will be reinstated once they verify their employment status and complete the required clearance with the Ghana Audit Service.

The Department explained that the suspension followed recommendations from the Auditor-General and was carried out in line with Public Financial Management (PFM) laws. It stressed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the integrity of the government payroll system.

Speaking in an interview on, Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Agyei reiterated the Department’s dedication to transparent payroll administration and timely salary payments.

“The Auditor-General conducted a headcount exercise last year and, just last month, wrote to us indicating that about 6,000 officers had not participated in the exercise and therefore should not be paid,” Agyei explained.

“However, after our internal review, we found that only about 2,000 officers were affected, as the issues relating to the others had already been resolved. Consequently, we suspended salary payments for those affected and have informed their respective institutions to ensure staff present themselves to the Ghana Audit Service for verification. Once the Auditor-General completes the process and formally notifies us, we will reactivate their payments,” he added.

The move underscores the government’s efforts to maintain payroll accuracy while safeguarding the rights of public sector workers.
