Nana Kwaku Bonsam says the Sports Minister ignored his advice and contributed to Ghana’s World Cup elimination

Ghanaian traditional priest Nana Kwaku Bonsam has called for the removal of Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams, blaming him for the Black Stars’ early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Nana Kwaku Bonsam, the minister’s failure to follow his advice contributed to Ghana’s elimination from the tournament.
The Black Stars began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before drawing goalless with England. Ghana then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match but advanced to the knockout stage.
Ghana’s World Cup campaign eventually ended in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Speaking in an interview, Nana Kwaku Bonsam said Kofi Adams should be removed from office, insisting that he had warned the minister about decisions that could affect Ghana’s campaign.
“They have to sack the Sports Minister. The Black Stars’ World Cup exit was caused by Kofi Adams’ failure to follow my instructions,” he said.
He claimed he had advised that Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare should start all of Ghana’s matches at the tournament.
“I said that Benjamin Asare should be in the goalpost throughout the tournament; if not, we will exit the tournament,” he added.
Nana Kwaku Bonsam also claimed that he used spiritual powers to prevent England captain Harry Kane from scoring during Ghana’s goalless draw with the Three Lions.
“I demonstrated my power by stopping Harry Kane from scoring against Ghana. I promised that if Ghana drew, I would buy a cow to appease the gods,” he said.
He further criticised Kofi Adams for appearing at a church and expressing confidence in Ghana’s chances at the World Cup.
According to Nana Kwaku Bonsam, traditional priests should also receive recognition when Ghana records success in football.
“The Minister went to church to tell Ghanaians that Ghana will win, and if they had won, the pastors and prophets would take the credit, so I didn’t allow it because when I stopped Harry Kane, no one called to thank me,” he said.
Nana Kwaku Bonsam subsequently called for greater recognition of traditional priests and their contribution to Ghanaian society.
The Black Stars are scheduled to return to action later this month under new head coach Carlos Queiroz in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ghana will face Côte d’Ivoire away at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 28.
The Black Stars will then face Morocco in an international friendly at the Grand Stade de Tanger on October 4.
