Real Madrid secured a crucial La Liga victory away at Alavés, easing the growing pressure on head coach Xabi Alonso following a difficult run of results.

Alonso had come under intense scrutiny after consecutive defeats to Celta Vigo in the league and Manchester City in Europe, with speculation mounting that another loss could have put his future in serious doubt. Instead, his side responded with a resilient performance that cut the gap to league leaders Barcelona to four points.

Madrid had previously enjoyed a five-point lead at the top of the table after defeating Barcelona in El Clásico at the end of October. However, dropped points in recent matches — including draws against Elche and Rayo Vallecano — allowed Hansi Flick’s Barcelona to seize control of the title race.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute through Kylian Mbappé, who latched onto a precise pass from Jude Bellingham before curling a superb strike into the top corner. The goal marked Mbappé’s 17th league goal of the season and his 70th for the club since joining Real Madrid in July 2024.

Alavés responded after the break, with substitute Carlos Vicente making an immediate impact. Just a minute after coming on in the 68th minute, he expertly controlled a long ball from Antonio Blanco and fired past Thibaut Courtois to level the score.

Real Madrid regained the lead in the 76th minute when Rodrygo burst into the penalty area and converted from close range following a well-timed assist from Vinícius Júnior.

The victory provides a welcome reprieve for Alonso and his team, who now turn their attention to a home league clash against Sevilla on Saturday evening (20:00 GMT).
