The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspected gang leader and an accomplice in connection with the deadly armed robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus that claimed the life of footballer Dominic Frimpong.
The incident occurred last Sunday along the Bibiani–Goaso road after the Ghana Premier League side returned from a match against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park.
Reports indicate that armed assailants blocked the road and opened fire when the bus driver attempted to reverse upon detecting danger. Players and officials were forced to abandon the bus and flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunshots.
Amid the confusion, forward Dominic Frimpong was shot in the head. He was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead. Six other players sustained minor injuries during the attack.
Following the incident, police launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
In a statement issued on Thursday, April 16, the service confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to both the robbery and the killing of the 20-year-old, who was on loan from Aduana FC.
Police revealed that one of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds during a shootout with intelligence operatives and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.
Before his tragic death, Dominic Frimpong had emerged as one of Berekum Chelsea’s bright prospects this season, scoring two goals in 13 league appearances.
Football governing bodies, including FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, along with several clubs, have since paid tribute to the young player, whose death has sent shockwaves across the football community.
