Telecom giant passes on tax relief to subscribers following new national VAT rules.

Story Highlights
  • MTN reduces tariffs across all products and services, effective immediately.
  • VAT reforms include a rate drop to 20% and abolition of the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy.
  • Small businesses benefit from higher VAT registration threshold, easing compliance.

MTN Ghana has announced that it is reducing tariffs on all its products and services, following recent reforms to the country’s Value Added Tax (VAT) system.

In a public statement, the telecom giant confirmed that the new pricing structure aligns with amendments under the Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151), effective January 1, 2026. The company emphasized that the reductions take immediate effect across all its offerings.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) introduced the VAT reforms to simplify tax administration, enhance compliance, and ease the financial burden on both households and businesses.

Key highlights of the VAT reforms include:

  • Reduction of the VAT rate to 20%

  • Abolition of the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy

  • Increase of the VAT registration threshold for goods-dealing businesses from GH¢200,000 to GH¢750,000, exempting many small enterprises

  • Re-coupling of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) and Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) levies, allowing businesses to claim input tax credits

  • Elimination of the VAT Flat Rate Scheme to create a more streamlined system

MTN Ghana stated that the tariff cuts reflect the impact of these reforms on operational costs and are intended to pass the benefits directly to subscribers.

The GRA has encouraged all VAT-registered taxpayers—including employers, importers, exporters, accountants, and tax consultants—to familiarize themselves with the updated VAT framework and seek clarification through official channels.

MTN urged customers to visit its website for detailed information on the new tariffs, reiterating its commitment to providing affordable, value-driven services in line with national fiscal policy.
