NPP Updates Internal Election Rules to Boost Transparency and Inclusiveness
NPP introduces sweeping reforms to its internal electoral processes to enhance fairness, accountability, and participation across all levels.

- New guidelines allow suspension of polling station elections in cases of disputes to ensure fairness.
- Introduction of e-voting and stricter eligibility criteria to improve transparency and credibility.
- Party aligns branch and regional structures while setting up a committee to develop an operational manual.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has introduced sweeping changes to its internal election guidelines in a move aimed at strengthening transparency, inclusiveness, and overall credibility within the party’s electoral processes.
The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held on April 8, 2026, at its headquarters. Acting on behalf of the National Council in accordance with the party’s constitution, the NEC approved the revisions following challenges encountered during ongoing registration and internal elections.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party explained that the updated rules are intended to deepen internal democracy and ensure smoother, more transparent elections across all levels.
Key Reforms at Polling Stations
Among the major changes is a provision allowing polling station elections to be suspended in cases of disputes—particularly when eligible members, including those registered online, are unable to vote or participate. Such issues will now be escalated through constituency structures to regional steering committees for resolution.
The party has also capped polling station executive positions at 25 and introduced clearer guidelines for cluster polling stations. Under the new rules, members may contest within clusters, provided they reside in the relevant electoral area.
Eligibility requirements have been tightened, with members now required to live and vote in the same polling station area where they intend to contest. Exceptions apply to special polling stations, such as those in security zones, tertiary institutions, government ministries, markets, and hospitals.
Changes at Electoral Area and Chapter Levels
At the electoral area level, committees are now permitted to conduct up to 10 executive elections. Polling station executives seeking to contest at this level must first resign from their positions before filing nominations.
For chapter elections, the NEC has formalized committee structures and introduced flexibility in voting, allowing both in-person and electronic voting through the party’s official platform. Only members who have been active for at least two years will be eligible to vote or contest.
Positions at the chapter level will mirror those at the constituency level, including roles such as chairperson, secretary, organiser, and communications officer. Newly elected executives will also appoint individuals to support key functions such as research, electoral affairs, and financial management.
Alignment of Branch Elections
Branch elections will similarly be conducted either physically or through the party’s e-voting system, with eligibility restricted to members of at least two years’ standing.
The party has aligned branch-level executive roles with those at the regional level to ensure consistency across its structure. Elected branch executives will also appoint officers to assist with administrative and operational duties.
Committee to Develop Operational Manual
As part of the broader reforms, the NEC has established an ad-hoc committee to develop a comprehensive manual detailing the roles and responsibilities of party officials at all levels.
The committee will be chaired by former party chairman Peter Mac Manu and includes legal and governance experts from within the party.
Call for Compliance and Unity
The NPP has called on all members and stakeholders to familiarize themselves with the revised guidelines and adhere strictly to them.
According to the party, the reforms are designed to promote unity, credibility, and inclusiveness while reinforcing its internal democratic structures. Leadership also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the party’s core values and traditions through collaborative efforts among members.
