Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice-Presidential Candidate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has called for Nkrumahfest to remain a national platform for honouring the legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, rather than becoming a partisan political gathering.
Speaking at the 2026 Nkrumahfest held at Nkroful in the Ellembelle Municipality of the Western Region to mark Dr Nkrumah’s 117th birthday, Dr Opoku Prempeh said the event must bring Ghanaians together regardless of their political affiliations.
He said Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence, nation-building and the African liberation struggle transcends partisan politics and generations.
Dr Opoku Prempeh acknowledged that Ghanaians may continue to disagree on Nkrumah’s governance, economic policies and approach to development, but said such disagreements should not diminish the historical significance of his contribution to Ghana and Africa.
He urged Ghanaians to rise above partisan narrowness and recognise personalities whose contributions have laid the foundation for the country’s national identity and democratic development.
According to him, Nkrumah gave Ghana a strong presence on the global stage and championed a broader Pan-African vision that continues to influence generations.
Dr Opoku Prempeh further called on Ghanaians to use the occasion to recommit themselves to the ideals of selfless service, patriotism, national unity and national development.
He also expressed appreciation to the chief convener of the annual Nkrumahfest, Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Minister for Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for inviting him to the celebration.
He said the invitation, which crossed political lines, demonstrated that the festival could serve as a national platform for celebrating the memory and contribution of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
