Preparations are underway in Osun State, Nigeria, as the Ooni of Ife, His Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, prepares to confer one of the most prestigious Yoruba chieftaincy titles, “Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source,” on President John Mahama on Monday, December 15, 2025.

The title, which loosely translates as “A President who reorganizes the global space for humanity,” recognises President Mahama’s long-standing advocacy for multilateralism, equitable global governance, and sustainable development.

President Mahama has consistently championed cooperation among nations to address global challenges, including climate change and economic inequality, while pushing for a stronger voice for developing countries in international policy-making. His recent address to the United Nations resonated across Africa and the world, highlighting his commitment to fairness and collaboration on the global stage.

On Sunday, December 14, the Ooni’s palace grounds in Ile-Ife were abuzz with activity, with canopies being erected, decorations set up, and portraits of President Mahama prominently displayed, as the community eagerly anticipated his visit.

President Mahama, who already holds the honorary title of Aare Atolase of Offa, has cultivated strong ties with Yoruba communities. In October 2015, the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State conferred that title on him, recognising his leadership and commitment to preserving the nobility of the kingdom.

The upcoming installation as Aare Atayeto Oodua is expected to further strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana.

The Ooni of Ife, as the traditional ruler of Ile-Ife, holds immense influence across the Yoruba world. Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who ascended the throne in 2015, is celebrated for promoting Yoruba culture, interfaith dialogue, socio-economic development, and strengthening connections with the African diaspora.

Ile-Ife, considered the ancestral and spiritual home of the Yoruba people, further enhances the cultural significance of this honour.
