Tensions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency have escalated into violence, leaving one person injured after an alleged mob attack linked to internal party disagreements.

The victim, identified as Adam Shamuna, sustained an eye injury after he was reportedly attacked by about 15 individuals believed to be affiliated with the East Mamprusi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The incident is said to have stemmed from a heated exchange on an NDC WhatsApp platform over fertiliser distribution issues.

According to Shamuna, the confrontation began after he allegedly made comments perceived as insulting toward the MCE during an online discussion.

He admitted making the remarks but insisted they were personal opinions expressed in defence of a political figure he supports.

“The MCE’s boys were also insulting Alhaji Baba,” he claimed.

Shamuna is believed to be aligned with former Nalerigu/Gambaga MP and Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Alhaji Baba Seidu Issifu, while his alleged attackers are said to be supporters of the current MCE and the North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia.

The incident highlights growing factional tensions within the party at the local level, with rival groups accusing each other of sabotage and disloyalty.

Shamuna further alleged that one of the attackers was armed with a pistol and threatened to kill him during the assault.

In a related development, the MCE has reported Shamuna to the police over the WhatsApp comments that triggered the dispute.

A formal invitation issued by the Gambaga District Police Commander, ASP Stephen K. Takia, requests Shamuna to assist with investigations into an alleged offensive post made on April 24, 2026, targeting the MCE, Mr. Bareche David Bukari.

Shamuna has confirmed receipt of the police invitation and says he will honour it, insisting he is prepared to defend his comments.

Police have yet to confirm any arrests related to the assault, while efforts to reach the MCE for comment were unsuccessful.
