- Initiative aims to train one million Ghanaians in coding and digital competencies for the future economy
MTN Ghana has pledged US$2 million to support the Government of Ghana’s flagship One Million Coders Programme, a strategic initiative by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations aimed at accelerating the nation’s digital transformation and empowering youth with critical skills.
The funding will help train one million Ghanaians in coding and other digital competencies, preparing them for the digital economy and enabling them to contribute to national development.
The contribution follows commitments made by MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita and Vice Presidents for Ghana, Ebenezer Asante and Stephen Blewett, during discussions with the Minister of Communications on the sidelines of the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last year. The talks focused on enhancing public-private partnerships to strengthen Africa’s digital capacity, unlock innovation, and create inclusive economic opportunities.
Speaking on MTN Ghana’s support, CEO Stephen Blewett said:
“Youth empowerment is a critical priority for MTN Ghana. Africa has the youngest population in the world, and Ghana has an unprecedented opportunity to equip its youth with future-ready digital skills. Through the One Million Coders Programme, we are creating pathways for young people to embrace innovation, acquire new skills, and access opportunities in the digital economy. Investing in our youth is investing in the long-term prosperity and sustainability of our nation.”
The One Million Coders Programme, led by the Ministry, is a key pillar of Ghana’s digitalisation agenda. It seeks to develop a strong pool of digital talent to support public sector modernisation, private sector growth, entrepreneurship, and job creation. By expanding access to coding and software development skills, the initiative aims to boost productivity, drive innovation, and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
MTN Ghana’s contribution aligns with the MTN Group’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, particularly its focus on digital inclusion, education, and youth development. The company continues to invest in Ghana’s ICT ecosystem, including plans to establish a US$25 million ICT Centre as a hub for innovation, training, and digital collaboration.
The MTN Ghana Foundation also supports digital education initiatives nationwide, including the Ministry’s Girls in ICT programme, furthering MTN’s commitment to building digital skills, advancing education, and empowering communities.
Through initiatives like the One Million Coders Programme, MTN Ghana underscores its long-term dedication to national development, leveraging technology and partnerships to empower youth, drive digital transformation, and promote sustainable socio-economic growth.
