Ghana and South Korea have agreed to begin negotiations on a visa waiver agreement following bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
The development was disclosed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Friday, March 13, 2026.
According to the minister, the two leaders have directed their respective foreign ministers to commence discussions aimed at finalising the visa waiver arrangement, which is expected to ease travel between the two countries.
He noted that the foreign ministries of Ghana and South Korea have been tasked to conclude negotiations on the agreement by June this year.
“The two Foreign Ministers have been urged to conclude negotiations by June this year,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
The proposed visa waiver agreement is expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries while facilitating easier movement for citizens for business, tourism and other engagements.
Mr Ablakwa assured the public that updates on the progress of the negotiations will be communicated as discussions advance.
The announcement follows President Mahama’s engagement with President Lee Jae Myung during his working visit to South Korea, where both leaders explored ways to deepen cooperation between the two nations.
President Mahama is currently on a five-day working visit to South Korea aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for trade, investment and technological cooperation.
As part of the visit, President Mahama on Thursday, March 12, commissioned a modern Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, further strengthening cooperation between the two countries in energy and industrial development.
